Death of the Cheque

Death of the Cheque

Cheques are quickly becoming redundant as banks and government departments stop accepting them.

Kiwibank and NZ Post stopped accepting cheques last year as well as Inland Revenue and ACC.  Some large banks are still issuing and accepting cheques, but this is expected to end this year as most banks have indicated they will no longer do this.  ANZ expects to stop in May this year, Westpac in June and BNZ in July.  ASB has yet to announce a date, but have said they will also be stopping cheques.

This will affect many people especially those who have always used cheques for payments, or who have poor internet access, so struggle to use internet banking.

There are several other ways of making payments for invoices and taxes etc., such as phone banking, over the counter banking, internet banking, direct debit, credit/debit card etc.  If you are someone who uses cheques as your main form of payment, you should look into other methods of payment now, get these in place and become familiar with using them, prior to cheques being stopped altogether.
